This chapter examines whether the social science and humanities literature on larger communities in trouble helps to explain troubled families and, if it does, whether similar legal or policy steps could prevent family violence. Some of the patterns others have explored for intracommunity crises might also apply to the less violent conflicts of divorce and early (involuntary) emancipation of children.
