Part II of this book addresses the link of psychoanalysis to modernism. Each chapter begins at the point when Sigmund Freud's visibility was growing in American society and culture, the 1940s to the 1960s. This part also concentrates on the developments in the culture outside of psychoanalysis, exploring the context rather than the inside of the psychoanalytic movement. Each chapter analyzes intellectual and social factors in American culture. Then, the book explores how psychoanalytic thinking played into the cultural changes that began before World War II but evolved in a stronger or weaker form to the end of the century. The ultimate decline in both technical psychoanalysis and in the status of overtly Freudian thinking among intellectuals in general is explained.
