This chapter examines Sacred Harp groups in Chicago, Illinois, and Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota. It explains that many northern Sacred Harp groups were formed out of performing groups or folk music institutions whose Sacred Harp singing was first performed as part of a broader repertoire by choir or folk groups. The chapter explores under what circumstances these northern Sacred Harp groups followed or disregarded southern Sacred Harp singing practices and describes how the relationships between singers were enacted.
