Chapter 1 suggested that the first year out was analogous to teens gathered around a wobbly table. In this metaphor on the table is an identity lockbox for the storage of critical identities and next to it is the game of daily life management, which seems to engross all those gathered around the table. This chapter describes this game board and its pieces, the rules of play, and the goals of the game. Doing so conveys not only “what” the key components of the first year out are, but also “why” managing these components so engrosses teens during the first year out.
