This chapter presents excerpts from the diary of Shoshana Kahan, a Jewish actress. Written between 1941 and 1945, the diary is an extremely valuable contribution to works about wartime Shanghai. Kahan began keeping a record from the first week of World War II in September 1939, describing in detail the departure of her husband, her sons, and eventually of herself from Warsaw. The diary concludes with her departure from Shanghai for the United States in October 1946.
