This chapter takes a preliminary step in analyzing empirically the role of the endowment in nonprofit organizations. It is organized as follows. Section 7.1 describes the process of endowment generation and donor behavior that governs nonprofit organizations. Section 7.2 discusses potential measures of governance in nonprofits. Section 7.3 provides details on the Internal Revenue Service data used to examine organizations' endowments. Section 7.4 presents the results on patterns of endowments and precautionary savings. Section 7.5 undertakes a preliminary investigation into the link between governance and endowment intensity; and Section 7.6 concludes.
