This chapter discusses issues concerning the commercialization of academic research in the U.S. Though most universities have remained queasy about selling their research they have faced increasing pressure from technology transfer. This suggests that the pursuit of money from knowledge has become an everyday reality in the conduct of modern research and that technology transfer and other moneymaking opportunities are now woven into the social system of science. This chapter also discusses the work of the Research Corporation in locating industrial customers for academic patents and negotiating deals that produced revenues for inventors and their universities.
