This chapter focuses on the years of the sex wave in West Germany roughly from 1959 to 1968. It explains the that first stages of the wave occurred outside the erotica industry proper and that it was only around 1961 that the erotica industry, starting with Beate Uhse, emerged from its self-protective anonymity. During this period, sexual consumption went public, which suggests that this sex wave was not triggered by state action and that it represented a new type of behavior in the marketplace brought about the West Germany's increasing wealth.
