Drawing on studies of the home power movement, the chapter distinguishes between technologies and practices that center our existence and those that enable, in a supportive role, that center to exist and flourish. With this basic distinction in hand, it draws out reform possibilities in the design of technologies. Along the way, the chapter uses a phrase of Langdon Winner that artifacts have politics; the chapter finds that the redesign of technology encourages participatory research and development and participatory democracy.
