This chapter focuses on the authorities' decision to have the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) built in Waxahachie, Texas and not in Batavia, Illinois. The staff of Fermilab reacted negatively to this announcement and the somber mood at the laboratory continued into the directorship of John Peoples, Jr., Fermilab's third director. This chapter discusses the leadership style of Peoples and the termination of the SSC project in 1993 because of funding problems.
