This chapter explores alternative models of productivity change. It compares the conventional model of disembodied technical change developed by Solow and by Jorgenson and Griliches with a variety of possibilities organized around the model of embodied technical change, which is extended to include learning and diffusion effects, plant heterogeneity, capital-skill complementarity, R&D, and worker-machine matching. A commentary is also included at the end of the chapter.
