This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is anti-German counterespionage in France under the Vichy regime. This volume attempts to reinsert this counterespionage activity into its original context by, among other things, looking at the relation between the activities of the counterespionage services and the government of the time. It also investigates the identity of the German spies and how they were treated by the French once caught.
