This chapter focuses on the failed initial attempt of the American and British forces to invade Italy in September 1943. This event caused the deaths of 350,000 Allied lives and the American government was forced to conduct a draft. This chapter discusses the legislative hearings concerning the drafting of fathers with dependent children and the policy of sending other fathers to work in munition plants.
