This chapter examines the evolution of fatherhood in U.S. before and after World War II. It highlights the fact that the expectation that fathers should know how to change a diaper was not new to the postwar period and that the norms applied to fathers in the 1950s did not remain constant, nor did they change in a more progressive way. This chapter suggests that the modern evolution of the culture of fatherhood in the prewar era and its traditionalization in the postwar era resulted in the fluctuating pattern of expectations of fatherhood.
