This chapter compares differing Machazian experiences with war-time mobility to show the relationship between movement and the conditions most often associated with the term “displacement.” It argues that displacement has less to do with movement per se and more to do with how the transformation of relationships between people and their lived environments produces structural violence. This chapter explains that relocation did not always engender the sentiments and social conditions typically invoked by the term “displacement.”
