This chapter presents the seventh- and eighth-day experiences of Jay Mechling while camping with Boy Scout Troop 49. The weekend of the patrol overnight is an important tradition for the troop, and it serves several purposes. The overnight gives some of the Scouts a chance to prepare meals for badges, the hiking itself may count toward some badges, and the patrol gets a chance to develop some closeness away from the other patrols. By midmorning, alumni and dads had begun arriving in camp in anticipation of the overnight. Some dads would accompany the patrols out on their hiking and camping adventure, which is always at a site chosen by the boys. The weekend is a troop reunion of sorts, as alumni otherwise out of touch with the troop and each other take the weekend away from work and family to have some male fun in the woods.
