This chapter presents the eleventh-day experience of Jay Mechling while camping with Boy Scout Troop 49. He decided to visit Les's campcraft class in the morning. That morning a small class was arranged on how to lash poles together with rope. From the Rope Slide to the smallest constructions in patrol campsites, rope lashings were the fundamental method for joining poles. Each boy in the class had two small segments of tree branches. The initiation drama staged by Troop 49 is not quite as dramatic as the Order of the Arrow (OA), but it has its own powers. The troop's initiation customs enact the classic formula. For the weeks at the camp and even the weeks before the camp, the new boys are in many ways separate from the group.
