This chapter presents the twelfth-day experience of Jay Mechling, a professor of American studies at the University of California, while camping with Boy Scout Troop 49. This was to be the last regular day at the camp, and the boys seemed to have mixed feelings. Seniors spent their spare time beginning the process of breaking down the camp, disassembling elements that would not be needed over the next twenty-four hours. At lunch with the Tiger Patrol, the talk was about the upcoming Nugget Auction that evening, the last fun event in the camp. The games of Insane Day are ritual contests of physical skill and strategy, involving a little or no luck; as such, they confirm for the boys the causal connection among physical skill, strategy, and success.
