The Final Weekend: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday

Show Summary Details

This chapter presents the final-weekend experience of Jay Mechling, a professor of American studies at the University of California, while camping with Boy Scout Troop 49. Some families would camp out at the public campground where the rest of Troop 49's activities would take place that weekend. Others had rented rooms or cabins at the nearby lodge. Hot showers and real mattresses beckoned. The adults remained in the camp to finish breaking down the equipment and loading it onto the flatbed truck. All the camp tables had to be disassembled, Usonia Lake Municipal Utilities District (ULMUD) disassembled, and the KYBO taken down. The Court of Honor rivals the Investiture as a sacred ritual for the troop. The Court of Honor is the public occasion for conferring badges and ranks upon the Scouts. The American and troop flags hung vertically from a rope as background for this ceremony.
