As we have now seen how pictures and poems were incorporated into the prose matrix of a geological text, this chapter turns to the prose itself, to the textual equivalents of Rudwick's “scenes from deep time.” The first two sections examine how single scenes were restored, beginning with straightforward descriptions and ending with visionary apparitions. The chapter then explores how these scenes were tied together into theatrical sequences.
