This chapter presents an autobiographical narrative, the Report of Soeur Jacqueline, which recounts the “crisis of the dowry” that shook Jacqueline Pascal shortly before she professed vows as a nun. According to the custom of the period, families were expected to provide the convent with a dowry at the moment their daughters professed vows. Jacqueline Pascal expected to use her share of the inheritance from her father Étienne as her dowry. Her brother Blaise and her sister Gilberte, however, opposed this project and threatened legal action to keep the money in the family. The Report recounts the bitter dispute between Jacqueline and Blaise over the proposed dowry.
