This chapter discusses changes in the London Charity Organization Society (COS) in the 1920s and 1930s. During this period, the social work of the London COS was increasingly recognised and it further increased as the society became more active in the direct provision of women's work. COS leadership also became committed to the idea of casework as the only possible antidote to the failures of mass action in addressing poverty. This chapter also highlights the role of the COS in the training of social workers.
