This chapter presents an account of the Haitian revolution based on the manuscript of the unpublished play called “Le Philanthrope revolutionnaire ou l'hecatombe a Haiti.” Though this is fictional it shows a white author trying to imagine how a black insurgent might have explained his motives and how colonial whites understood the actions of the French official Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, who issued the first emancipation decree on 20 June 1793. This chapter explains the plot of the play.
