This chapter examines the history of biotechnology in Cuba. It highlights the role of interferon in the field of biotechnology science in Cuba and explains that Cubans have worked on interferon since the very beginning of their interest in biotechnology. The Cubans were able to successfully manufacture first-quality purified interferon and, ultimately, recombinant engineered interferon as well through a form of international solidarity. This chapter suggests that the focus on interferon show the socialist character of Cuban science.
