This chapter analyzes two primary Jewish–Christian debates in late antiquity: the first over the accuracy and canonicity of the Septuagint, the Jewish Bible translation that became the Bible of the early Church; and the second over the virginity of Mary, a theme tied to the Septuagint through Matthew's citation of the Greek for Isaiah 7:14 as prophecy of the virgin birth. It is argued that these themes are not just linked, but are in fact parallel, producing a conception of the perfect reproduction of God's word in both the Septuagint and the figure of Jesus Christ.
