Show Summary Details

This book gathers a representative sample of stories, which features Zayas's signature topics—gender equality and domestic violence—written in an impassioned tone overlaid with conservative Counter-Reformation ideology. The Exemplary Tales of Love includes Julián Olivares's edition of the book's second publication. In this volume, women alternate with men in telling the Exemplary Tales of Love. Zayas's first volume of novellas contained ten stories, as did her second published ten years later, the Tales of Disillusion. Over the course of the framing narrative, which begins in the first part and concludes at the end of the second volume, Zayas's tone changed: the invective against abuse of women is much more bitter and violence against women reaches almost levels in the Tales of Disillusion.
