This chapter discusses the value of novel criticism as a form of media study. It suggests that literary criticism is an act of keeping conversant that entails holding open the text for close attention as well as up for ideological debate. This chapter also clarifies that narratology reads mostly for the plot or the point of view and for the microplot of narrative language itself, tracked at times syllable by syllable across a building sequence.

Keywords: novel criticism; media study; literary criticism; ideological debate; narratology; plot; microplot; narrative language
