This introductory chapter begins with a brief discussion of the paucity of work on Spanish nationalism. It then sets out the purpose of the book, which is to present an interpretation of the emergence and evolution of Spanish national identity. The first part of the book covers the ancient, mediaeval and early modern periods. The entire second part is dedicated to the culture of nineteenth-century Spain: its history, literature, painting, music, archaeology and anthropology. The third part tackles the immense issue of the relationship between Spanish nationalism and Catholic culture and belief. The final part offers an overall analysis of the political role of Spanish nationalism in the nineteenth century and even makes a few suggestions in relation to its consequences for the twentieth century.
