This introductory chapter discusses the objective of this book, which is to determine the ways in which female sexuality was regulated in Northern Ireland in the twentieth century. The book describes the experiences of women involved in prostitution, those who lived in rescue homes and those who were suspected of having venereal disease, as well as those who interacted with US troops and accessed family planning. It also investigates the role of the church in regulating female sexuality.
