This chapter explores the relationship between two generations of trade union leaders—Robert Knight and John Hill—and between liberalism and socialism. Tracing John Hill's ideas in more detail through his Annual Reports to his members and his interventions at the Trades Union Congress reveals that, as over questions of industrial strategy, he had more in common with Robert Knight than might be expected: just as Knight is better seen as a radical liberal than as a ‘conservative’, so Hill's ‘socialism’ is better understood if it is seen as a continuation of the same long radical tradition.
