This chapter examines the early life of Richard Wainwright. Wainwright was born on April 11, 1918 in Leeds, the same year that the Liberal Party suffered apparently fatal wounds. He was born into a prosperous, respectable household and his upbringing lacked neither resources nor emotional support. Wainwright had a privileged education, isolated from most 1930s schoolchildren, which nurtured talents and ideas which were to be essential to his political career and immunised him from the difficulties of the Liberal Party at national level.
