This chapter examines the relationship between Richard Wainwright and Jeremy Thorpe. It explains that Wainwright and Thorpe had been on the Liberal Party Executive together since the early 1950s but their relationship was never especially warm, and events served to bring simmering mutual suspicion to the boil. While Wainwright was a no-nonsense radical Methodist preacher, Thorpe was a flamboyant and volatile performer. This chapter discusses arguments that Thorpe's downfall was caused by Wainwright's opposition to Thorpe and his alleged homophobia.
