This introduction points out major developments in Polish scholarship on German history between the end of the war and the present day. The fraught relationship between Polish and German scholars was not merely a result of the destruction of the war years but older nationalist traditions of history-writing, which need to be taken into account as well as the status of partitioned Poland between 1795 and 1918.
