Most of the important naval events during the Civil War, like Hampton Roads and the Battle of Mobile Bay, were not Pacific events. The majority of the Union's naval efforts during the Civil War were naturally focused on the Atlantic and Gulf states, leaving the Pacific as, frankly, something of a backwater. But there were some real threats in the Pacific, greatly exacerbated by the reality of an unmanageably large area assigned to the responsibility of an exceedingly small squadron. The Civil War story of the USS Saginaw is a window into just how pervasive wartime activity was on the national and global stage.
