A family of C-type lectins that are involved in innate immune responses by binding to viruses and by opsonizing yeasts and bacteria. In humans there are three collectins: collectin-10 (collectin liver protein 1, 277 aa) that binds galactose > mannose = fucose > N-acetylglucosamine > N-acetylgalactosamine; collectin-11 (collectin kidney protein 1, 271 aa) that binds to LPS and binds fucose > mannose but does not bind to glucose, N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylgalactosamine; collectin-12 (collectin placenta protein 1, scavenger receptor class A member 4, 742 aa) that promotes binding and phagocytosis of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeast. it is also involved in the recognition, internalization, and degradation of oxidatively modified low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) by vascular endothelial cells. The collectins have a collagen-like region and a C-type lectin domain and are part of a family that also includes pulmonary surfactant proteins A and D (SP-A, SP-D), CL-43, serum mannan-binding lectin (MBP), and conglutinin. Complement C1q is also structurally related.
