A person who is not a constable or prison officer, employed to transport and guard prisoners. There are two classes of prisoner custody officer: one is employed by the prisoner escort service to escort prisoners between police stations, courts, and prisons; the second is employed as a prison officer in a privately managed prison. Their powers and duties are laid down in ss 82 and 86 of the Criminal Justice Act 1991.
