Chapter 5 dissects the events surrounding an agrochemical drift in 2009. The chapter argues that the response of authorities to this agrochemical drift exemplifies a mechanism of performative governance, whereby the relationships between peasants and authorities are shaped by practices of impression management and discourses that do things with words, which combine to create obstacles for contention. The chapter closes with an examination of the subjective understandings of contention, GM crops, and agrochemical drifts, showing the accommodations and adaptations developed by peasants, and the strategies devised by peasant households to make ends meet in the midst of an encroaching transgenic agriculture.
