This chapter introduces a new dataset on state support of rebel groups, clarifies the coding procedures used in this research, and provides historical examples from existing rebel groups and their state supporters. By conducting descriptive analysis on an original dataset of 457 rebel groups and their external state supporters from the Dangerous Companions Project (DCP), this chapter presents the distribution of support over the Cold War and post–Cold War periods, state selection versus rebel selection processes, and specific types of support. In addition, it explains the related existing datasets and the contribution of the new dataset analyzed in this book, State-Non-state Armed Group Cooperation (NAGs dataset). Finally, a preliminary analysis is performed of the rebel group-specific variables found in the new dataset, including group objectives, rebel-affiliated political parties, domestic constituencies within target or supporting states, and ideational characteristics, such as whether they are ethno-national and religious-oriented groups.
