Show Summary Details

The Shiʿis issues is discussed in this chapter. A study of their attitude towards either Iraqi or Arab nationalism is a difficult undertaking. The Shiʿis of Iraq was a silent majority. Sometimes even verbalizing the word Shiʿi is avoided. Taʿifiyya which means sectarianism in English is also looked at here, wherein racism comes into the picture. Furthermore, another derogatory name for the Shiʿis is introduced, this word is shuʿubiyya. Another term used after Taʿiffiyya and shuʿubiyya was iqlimmiyya. The three words were termed as the enemies of unity.
