This chapter discusses the development of Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) in Europe. Japanese FDI first entered European markets towards the end of the last century and established a number of enduring patterns. Yet recent Japanese direct investments in the region have broken with these initial patterns. In terms of relevant political changes, the modern history of Japanese FDI in Europe breaks down into five principal periods. These changes represent either important shifts in government policies or major international political events which critically affected Japanese investment flows to Europe.
