This chapter discusses Japanese direct investment in the European automobile industry. Although Japanese auto firms had set up limited service and assembly operations in Europe during the post-war period, not one such firm had ever manufactured automobiles in Europe before the 1980s. During the latter half of that decade, however, Nissan, Toyota, and many other Japanese car companies directly invested in major manufacturing operations within the European Community.
