This chapter examines a different dimension of regionalism, focusing on a highly developed regional community (the EU) and explores Member State treatment of non-EU immigrants. It rejects both the status quo and an overly rigid application of non-discrimination principles that might eliminate rather than equalize employment prospects for immigrants, locating a middle ground in trade union representation and advocacy to achieve a nuanced and flexible application of the ‘right to work’.
