This introduction considers various ways that musical and biographical arrangements participate in the assemblage of music history, tempering the mythmaking that typically accompanies such constructions of the past and serving as historiographies in their own right. Using examples from film and the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Olympic Games, the traditional narrative of Rhapsody in Blue as a sonic manifestation of the American Dream is connected to aspects of Gershwin’s biography, setting the stage for a reevaluation of both in the chapters that follow.
