The Boston Marathon is one the oldest and most prestigious distance running events in the world. Each April it attracts an international field of top marathoners along with thousands of amateur runners. The race has been a pioneer in the globalization of sports, as well as in participation by women and by disabled athletes. The marathon’s overall downhill trajectory—apart from the dreaded “Heartbreak Hill” in Newton—makes the course fast, so Boston times that make records now receive an asterisk. The marathon was the target of a bombing attack in April of 2013.
