A concept, in the works of cultural anthropologist Victor Turner (1920–83), referring to a phase—often transitional or transitory—‘betwixt and between’ positions or states. Turner writes of ‘the liminal community or comity of comrades’ as set apart from any ‘structure of hierarchically arranged positions’. The phase of the liminal has spatial dimensions, so that in certain ritualistic elements of the sport spectacle or event new meanings and relationships can emerge. ...
