A conditional mutation (ts mutation), one that is only expressed at certain temperatures, usually because the nonpermissive temperature causes conformational instability in an essential protein. By shifting cells in culture to the permissive temperature the gene is ‘switched’ on or off, depending on the temperature-sensitive gene involved....
