The Grimms’ story tells how Snow White, the daughter of a king, is envied by her beautiful but cruel stepmother, whose magic mirror tells her that Snow White is even fairer than herself. In a rage, the queen orders that Snow White be abandoned in a wood (in the original German, she intends that Snow White be killed and her heart cut out). Snow White, lost in the forest, comes to a cottage where the table is laid for seven and helps herself to food and drink from each of the places.
