Curtis, Moses Ashley (11 May 1808–10 April 1872), botanist and Episcopal minister, was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the son of Jared Curtis, a teacher and prison chaplain, and Thankful Ashley, the daughter of revolutionary war general Moses Ashley. Young Curtis received his early education at home and at Stockbridge Academy, a private school where his father was preceptor.
