Hadden, Briton (18 February 1898–27 February 1929), magazine founder and editor, was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Crowell Hadden, Jr., and Elizabeth Busch. Crowell Hadden, a stockbroker, died in 1905; Elizabeth Hadden married William Pool in 1911. Briton Hadden’s mother strongly encouraged his childhood fascination with satirical writing and word games. At both the Hotchkiss School and Yale, Hadden edited the student papers and displayed a remarkable willingness to experiment with the presentation of news.
