Friml, Rudolf (07 December 1879–12 November 1972), composer and pianist, was born Charles Rudolf Friml in Prague, Bohemia (later Czech Republic), the son of Frantisek Friml, a baker, and Maria Kremenak. Encouraged by his father, who played the zither and accordion, Rudolf began studying the piano and, at age ten, published his first composition, a “Barcarolle.” With financial assistance from his poor family and neighbors, he attended the Prague Conservatory beginning in 1893, won a scholarship, and studied piano with Josef Jiránek and composition with Josef Foerster and ...
